Sjaan Oomen
Sjaan Oomen joined the Concertgebouw Orchestra’s second violin section on 1 March 2014.
The daughter of composer, pianist and conductor Antoine Oomen, Sjaan Oomen grew up in Amsterdam immersed in music, and the arts in general. She draws, paints and sings, and was a member of the Vocoza chamber choir.
Oomen started studying the violin with Aimée Broeders when she was seven years old. At the age of ten, she was accepted to the Conservatorium van Amsterdam’s Young Talent programme where her teachers included Vesko Eschkenazy. Oomen graduated from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where she studied with Ilya Grubert. She has participated in numerous courses and masterclasses including the International Summer Academy in Leipzig, the Holland Music Sessions in Bergen – where she studied with Rudolf Koelman, György Pauk and Josef Rissin – and the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena.
Starting in 2005, Oomen frequently performed in the first violin section of Amsterdam Sinfonietta. She has given recitals in the Recital Hall of the Concertgebouw, Muziekcentrum Vredenburg in Utrecht and De Oosterpoort in Groningen.
Oomen is the recipient of various prizes at such national competitions as the Competition of the Foundation for Young Musical Talent in the Netherlands and the Iordens Viooldagen. In 2011, she reached the final of the Oskar Back National Violin Competition and started working regularly as a substitute in the Concertgebouw Orchestra that same year.
