About this concert

The Concertgebouw Orchestra performs one production a year at the Dutch National Opera. This season, Vasily Petrenko leads the orchestra in Boris Godunov, a grand historical drama by Modest Mussorgsky, who was far ahead of his time. Expect scheming monks, an oppressed and rebellious mob, a tsar who goes mad – and magnificent music.

The opera tells the story of Tsar Boris Godunov and a conflict between the Russian and Polish peoples. The two storylines stem from the murder of the young Dmitry, the tsar’s heir apparent, thus making way for Boris Godunov’s succession. The first storyline charts Boris’s personal development, who is increasingly tormented by, and finally succumbs to, guilt. The second involves the rebellion instigated by Grigory, who is a threat to Boris.
